RESTORING THE TRANSMISSION OF A 1972 V12 FERRARI 365 GTC 4

The engine & gearbox were removed  for rebuild & all the major mechanicals were removed at the same time. The gearbox was stripped apart & examined & various gears,2nd gear synchro rings were replaced, The differential & torque tube were in  a really poor condition cosmetically but were In full working order.

The appearance of the transmission was really poor as shown on the pics I have available.

The aluminium castings were badly corroded & covered with a combination of of white aluminium corrosion,oil,road dirt & whatever had been picked up over many years.It was not difficult to clean of the corrosion,oil & road dirt with a stiff wire brush.I used silver engine paint to restore the appearance of these aluminium parts

This silver paint looks really bright when first applied but after a few weeks teh brightness has faded.

Some time has now elapsed since the paint was applied & the appearance is as perfect as one could expect.I have used the same paint on the engine block & sump pan & again the appearance is excellent.

The front wheel hubs were  a real rusty mess as can be seen by the rust that was  clearly visible.The rust was bead blasted &  a treated with a rust prevention agentt before painting with  smooth black Hammerite. The  axle grease seal was replaced with a Ferrari uprated guard ring to produce the appearance left.

Both internal bearings on both sides were also replaced so the drive components not only look good but function properly as well.

The gearbox was removed from the car whilst still in unit with the engine.This is is fearsome piece of machinery & is both long & extremely heavy. It is much easier to remove & replace in one unit & clutch & gearbox alignment is facilitated.I replaced clutch plate,pressure plate & release bearing at this time even though these parts in reasonable condition.

The connection from the end of the drive shaft located by a phosphor bronze bush into the centre of a steel coupling. This  connects the transmission drive to a “doughnut”made of some particularly strong rubber over a heavy steel framework.Held by four large bolts to the  transmission shaft  & four more to the differential drive. There was wear in the bush on my car causing a rear end vibration at80-90 mph.This was solved  by replacing the bush & balancing all components of the drive train.
